When hearing the word English, what came across one’s mind is a foreign language in which writing and pronunciation do not correspond one to another, which makes some individuals feel that learning English is difficult. This, in turn, causes children and young generation to have low interest to learn English. This is what happens in Ketapang, West Kalimantan despite the fact that English is very important to improve human resources quality in various fields.

Seeing the condition, several young people in Ketapang decided to establish Ketapang English Community (KEC) in 2015 that specialized in Education, Social, and Tourism. In 2016, KEC was involved as a volunteer in the Satelite Event Youthful Social event supported by the Australian Embassy and acted as the representative of West Kalimantan province. In addition, it also did some competition projects. One of the competitions was English Spelling for all levels of education, namely for Elementary School (SD), Junior High School (SMP), and High School (SMA) in the Ketapang District. The activity attracted 573 participants in 2017.

In the social sector, KEC established an annual program dubbed KECHAP (KEC Charity Program), which is a charity event for the Dhuafa (the needy/poor) held during the Ramadhan/fasting. In the tourism sector, the community was trusted to be the official Guide of Wonderful Sail to Indonesia in 2016-2017. And in 2018, it officially became a part of Nation-wide certified Indonesian Association of Tour Guide.

I believe that in this world, there is no such thing as coincidence. Everything is arranged by the Lord Almighty. The same applies to my opportunity to know and collaborate with Taman Baca Inovator (TBI) Al Battani library. It was an opportunity that did not happen to everyone. Alhamdulillah, thanking the Lord Almighty, thanks to TBI, KEC fellows and I can share our knowledge by teaching at TBI Al Battani, which is located in SD 11 Muara Pawan elementary school. Through that opportunity, I could also connect with inspiring people.

TBI’s dedication that focused to improve children’s reading interest is remarkable. Through reading, a child would be able to access information and would have the knowledge to help them improve their quality. As we know, the children are the future. They are needed to develop a great nation. “The best quality of a human being is being useful for other people”. Therefore, while we still have our breath, let’s compete in kindness and in being useful for the people around us. (Elisa Apriani).
