Last April, Taman Baca Inovator (TBI) Phytagoras library – which is located in Kamal Village, Arjasa Subdistrict, Jember Regency – celebrated its one-year anniversary. As it is entering its second year, many good things are happening, including improved collaboration to improve the children’s reading interest. Within the past year, TBI has collaborated with Komunitas Jendela Jember to invite children to read more. Komunitas Jendela Jember itself is a community of youth focusing on education. Many activities have been conducted for the children of Kamal Village in cooperation with Komunitas Jendela. One of the activities is a fun learning activity held every week in the village hall.
Since Kamal Village has a large community with 3 elementary schools located within the village, TBI cannot reach the children by itself. It needs to partner with other parties, including several schools in the village. Apart from Komunitas Jendela, TBI has also partnered with three elementary schools so far, namely SDN 1 Kamal, SDN2 Kamal and SDN 3 Kamal. TBI has been bringing books to the elementary schools during recess time so that the children can make use of their time to read. In addition to being proactive by coming to the schools, the TBI Pythagoras library itself has housed more than 1000 book. TBI has also lent some books and assisted some schools that need more books. To this day, TBI Phytagoras has reached more than 200 children in several schools in the Kamal Village.
As with everything, nothing is instant in life. Increased reading interest of the children in Kamal Village cannot happen right away within one year of TBI Phytagoras establishment, but this is a very good start to build reading interest of Indonesian children. This good start will hopefully progress and develop as the TBI grows.
Wherever we are, together we can build the reading interest of Indonesian children. Let’s read!
