Wawan, The High-Spirited Boy from Cirawa

In this day and era, education is a very important tool. It is definitely more useful than wealth and position. Without education, it will be difficult to follow the constant development of this modern world. Wawan, one of the children supported by Taman Baca Inovator through its Anak Inovator program, embodies this spirit. Coming from an underprivileged family, he has stellar achievements in school and loves to read. He is relentless in his pursuit of education despite many challenges he has to face.

As a student of SD Sasakseng in the village of Cirawa, Wawan has to walk 2 km every day to go to school. However, this does not deter his spirit. From t 1st grade to 6th grade, he has been on top of his classes. Now, he has a simple hope of continuing his education to SMP Negeri 1 Cipatat and continue his education to be a teacher, which is not an easy dream to achieve considering his situation.

Wawan’s parents got divorced six years ago and decided to leave Wawan with his grandmother and grandfather. During the time, Wawan lost touch with his parents’ affection. But the upbringing he received from his grandmother and grandfather has shaped him into an independent, smart, patient and religious person. Today, he lives with his 60 years old grandmother who works hard every day to support his education. Since they are facing difficulties to make ends meet, Wawan must strive to continue his education to middle school. A way for education seemed to open up for him when a donor was willing to pay for Wawan’s education until high school. Nevertheless, if he accepted it, Wawan would be adopted and live far away from his grandmother. Consequently, for fear of being left alone, his grandmother did not allow Wawan to continue to middle school. Wawan remained hopeful, though. He hoped to get a scholarship to continue his education to middle school and remembered his principle that whatever will happen he would surrender to Allah and at the same time work hard to prepare for his best future.

Wawan is just a 14-year-old boy, but his enthusiasm to go to school and study is very inspiring. Wawan’s patience and spirit is a great example for other children in Indonesia. Therefore, he was given the Anak Inovator scholarship to help him continue his education and achieve his goals. Let’s support better literacy and education for Wawan and other Indonesian children by joining the Anak Inovator Scholarship Program.
