When Village Heads Teach Children

What will happen when village government synergizes with children? For sure there will be a burst of positive energy between the two parties. The village government represents a rigid local government while the children represent a more fluid cheerfulness.  In Taman Baca Inovator (TBI), we are uniting the two parties, creating a lively interaction between the village head who represent village government and the children who regularly visit TBI. This interaction could happen thanks to a program called ‘Kades Mengajar’ (Village Head Teaches), which is a collaboration between TBI and local village governments. In this program, we are encouraging the Village Head to teach some school subjects to children in TBI within their area.

This program has been implemented in two TBI locations in Bogor Regency. In TBI Isaac Newton in Ciadeg Village, Pak Aziz Muslim as Ciadeg’s Village Head taught small children how to read. The interaction between the Village Head and the children were so natural. Despite being a bit too stiff in the beginning, it flowed naturally after some time. Similarly to TBI Isaac Newton, what happened in TBI Alexander Graham Bell was also interesting. Pak Ujang as Village Head of Lemah Duhur did not come alone, but he came with several village officials who accompanied him. Apart from teaching and introducing the alphabet to children, he made a game out of the questions with prizes for children who can answer them. These fun events were not only attended by children but also their mother who were happily watching them. In addition to TBI outlets in Bogor Regency, the Kades Mengajar program will also be held in West Bandung Regency.

The Kades Mengajar program fosters collaboration and it is the strategy selected by Yayasan Taman Baca Inovator to attract village governments to be directly involved in Education, specifically literacy, in their own village. In our opinion, the existence of Taman Baca Inovator will be supported better with more people involved, and thus it will be able to evoke children’s interest to read in remote areas especially in the areas where TBI outlets thrive.
