Under the raining Ketapang sky, a gleam of spirit rose from Pematang Gadung village. Junior high schools students were running with their farmer hats. A few young people were pacing up and down to prepare something inside the hall. A tent stood tall outside as if it was not afraid of the rain that was hitting its roof.
I have just arrived with the manager of Taman Baca Inovator, and seeing those activities made us very happy. Our visit to inaugurate the opening of Taman Baca in Pematang Gadung village was seemingly hampered by the bad weather. However, that assumption quickly disappeared when we, as headquarters representatives, were warmly welcomed by the enthusiasm of the children, community and even the International Animal Rescue (IAR) team, who organized the inauguration event that day beautifully.
Taman Baca Inovator Alfred Russel Wallace was the answer to the somber situation in the wildlife conservation area. Children in the area had minimum access to books for education about accurate information on orangutans and slow lorises.
Taman Baca Inovator Alfred Russel Wallace is a caring contribution to help improve the quality of education in Indonesia. It started by providing easy access to high-quality books in Pematang Gadung village in Ketapang, West Kalimantan.
Taman Baca Inovator Alfred Russel Wallace is a gift for the children. It was such a pleasant experience to see them surprised to see a book that could be turned into a train. With their Melayu dialect, they spontaneously said: “Kak, how come a book could be pulled like this one?” Which was followed with a laugh.
Every time I heard their innocent laugh, it made me happy. It was very easy to make them happy. It made me believe that Taman Baca Inovator would keep growing in Pematang Gadung village. Even though in the beginning it only had 250 donated books, we would continue to improve the book donation to make the children believe that there is knowledge in books that are very important for Pematang Gadung’s development and that the books will provide better educational opportunities for children in Pematang Gadung.
