Positive Parenting

In the morning of 27 February 2019, mothers who lived around the Si Karel Tenjo Taman Baca Inovator (TBI) library visited and filled the library to participate in a parenting class. Some of them came with their children as school day finished at around the same time. Around 60 mothers gathered at the library that day for the class. The class began around 9:30 a.m. with Mrs. Tjitji Wartisah as the speaker.

Parenting Class

The Parenting Class was a basic training that has been given several times to mothers and parents of children around our TBI libraries. As a TBI library that is still in its first year,  we hope that Si Karel Tenjo library could be a place for children to read and play.  Therefore, it is necessary to build enthusiasm and knowledge of various parties that could support children’s education. One of the things that is very important for children’s education is parents’ awareness. Parents play a great role in the success of their children.

The parenting class was divided into two sessions, namely positive parenting patterns and group discussions. Discussions on the material occurred from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. while the group discussions occurred from 11:30 to 12:00 a.m. The first session’s material was about positive parenting patterns which highlighted that parenting and education in the family is of utmost importance. Children can grow and develop well if parenting is done appropriately in the family in accordance with the stages of development and age and with the application of positive parenting principles. In addition, parents could build effective communication and implement positive discipline in the family by optimizing children’s development which includes physical, logical, emotional and social aspects.

The second session was conducted through group discussions where the mothers were divided into four groups. Each group was given a set of paper and had to sort the things written on the paper into a sequence of priorities in positive parenting which will be supported by their reasons for their answers.

Overall, the mothers who participated in the training were quite enthusiastic during the training activities. Mrs. Tjitji as a speaker was quite an expert in parenting and also managed to get the class to have fun. We expect that with this activity parents will work together to improve children’s education and reading interest through a parenting that promotes characters development. (Evlin)
